Before Sophie Fatu sang a single note on Americaâs Got Talent, she already knew exactly which judge she wanted to impress.
Simon Cowell.
The tiny five-year-old walked onto the enormous AGT stage in 2018 with an infectious personality and immediately told Simon that he was her favorite judge.
Then she revealed something even sweeter.
She had dreamed that Simon pressed the Golden Buzzer for her.
The audience laughed.
Simon smiled.
But Sophie still had to show everyone what she could actually do.
Then she announced her song.
Frank Sinatraâs âMy Way.â
Not the Song You Expect From a 5-Year-Old
âMy Wayâ is usually associated with someone looking back over a long life.
Sophie was only five.
That contrast immediately made the song choice memorable.
Even Simon pointed out how unusual it was for someone so young to sing a song normally performed by much older singers.
Then the backing track began.
Sophie didnât look intimidated by the huge theater or thousands of people watching her.
She simply started singing.
She Had No Problem Owning the Stage
What made Sophieâs performance so entertaining wasnât only her voice.
It was her confidence.
She used little hand movements and facial expressions as she sang, performing the classic as though she had been listening to Sinatra for decades rather than only being alive for five years.
The audience quickly responded.
By the stronger part of the song, Sophie was giving everything she had.
And when she finished, the room erupted.
All Four Judges Stood Up
Sophie received a standing ovation from the audience and all four judges.
Simon, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Mel B were clearly charmed by both her singing and her personality.
Her Golden Buzzer dream didnât come true that night.
But she didnât need one to stay in the competition.
All four judges voted yes.
Sophie was moving on to Judge Cuts.
Sophie Had Another Sinatra Song Ready
When she returned for Judge Cuts, Sophie stayed true to the old-school music she clearly loved.
This time, she performed âNew York, New York.â
Before singing, Simon asked what she would do with the $1 million prize if she won.
Sophieâs answer showed that money wasnât really what interested her.
She said she simply wanted to sing for people and make them happy.
Once again, the young singer earned a standing ovation.
Her AGT journey ended at Judge Cuts, but her audition had already turned her into one of the seasonâs most memorable young performers.
Five Years Old, But Already Certain About What She Loved
Sophieâs audition worked because there was nothing complicated about her goal.
She loved singing.
She loved Frank Sinatra.
And she wanted to perform.
She walked onto AGT dreaming that Simon might press the Golden Buzzer.
That part didnât happen.
Instead, she walked away with four yes votes, a standing ovation and an audience that couldnât stop smiling.
Not bad for someone who was only five.
