He Called Himself a Karaoke Singer — Then One Word Had the Entire AGT Audience Joining In

When Andy Rowell walked onto the America’s Got Talent stage, Simon Cowell didn’t exactly look like someone expecting to discover the next great singer.

Andy introduced himself as a karaoke performer.

That alone made the audition unusual.

Most contestants come to America’s Got Talent hoping to impress the judges with huge voices, difficult songs or elaborate performances.

Andy had a very different strategy.

He walked onto the stage with a microphone and karaoke screen and prepared to perform a song requiring almost no singing at all.

His choice?

“Tequila” by The Champs.

And if you know the famous 1958 song, you probably already understand the joke.

There Was Only One Word to Sing

“Tequila” is almost entirely instrumental.

For long stretches, there are no lyrics.

Then, at exactly the right moment, the singer has one job:

Say “Tequila.”

That’s basically it.

Andy stood almost completely still while the instrumental played, staring at the karaoke screen and waiting patiently for his moment.

The judges initially seemed confused.

The audience wasn’t quite sure what they were watching.

It looked less like a huge AGT audition and more like someone awkwardly waiting for their turn at a neighborhood karaoke bar.

Then the countdown reached the right moment.

Andy raised the microphone.

“Tequila!”

And suddenly the joke made sense.

The Audience Started Getting Into It

Instead of delivering the word dramatically, Andy kept the same wonderfully serious expression.

Then he went back to waiting.

More instrumental music.

More awkward silence from the performer.

Another countdown.

Then:

“Tequila!”

By this point, the room was beginning to understand exactly what Andy was doing.

The audience started laughing and dancing along.

The judges began smiling.

And what initially looked like one of the strangest karaoke auditions suddenly became a giant sing-along. TIME described the performance as an unusually sparse karaoke act that eventually had the crowd and judges joining in.

Sometimes Doing Less Is Funnier

The clever part of Andy’s performance wasn’t his vocal ability.

It was the commitment.

He never tried to turn the song into something it wasn’t.

He simply stood there with an almost completely straight face, waited through the music and delivered the only lyric exactly when it appeared.

That deadpan style made each repetition funnier than the last.

By the final “Tequila!”, the audience knew exactly what was coming.

And instead of getting bored, they joined him.

The performance had transformed from one man doing karaoke into an entire room participating in the joke.

Even Simon Couldn’t Ignore It

Simon Cowell has never been known for going easy on unusual singing acts.

Yet Andy’s ridiculous simplicity somehow worked.

Simon said afterward that the performance was so silly that he loved it, while Julianne Hough praised Andy for getting such a huge response from something so simple. Howie Mandel also highlighted the importance of Andy’s song choice and said he wanted to see more.

Then came the vote.

Howie Mandel — yes.

Gabrielle Union — yes.

Julianne Hough — yes.

Simon Cowell — yes.

Andy had somehow earned four yes votes by performing a song containing essentially one word.

The Joke Had Already Worked Before AGT

Interestingly, Andy didn’t choose “Tequila” randomly.

Before appearing on America’s Got Talent, he had already posted another version of the performance online.

According to TIME, that earlier performance had gone viral with more than 2 million views.

So Andy already knew there was something strangely entertaining about standing almost motionless while waiting to say one word.

AGT simply gave him a much bigger audience.

Four Yeses for One Very Simple Idea

Andy eventually advanced to Judge Cuts, although he did not make it beyond that stage of the competition.

But his first audition remains the performance people remember.

There were no enormous high notes.

No complicated choreography.

No emotional backstory needed to understand it.

Just a microphone, a karaoke screen, one famous instrumental and perfect comedic timing.

Sometimes a talent-show performance doesn’t need to be technically complicated to entertain people.

Sometimes all you need is the right song…

…and one perfectly timed word.

TEQUILA! 😂🎤
